Flux Magazine | Editorial Designer
As one of seven designers for Flux Magazine, the School of Journalism’s capstone award-winning magazine, I coordinated with team of designers, writers, and photographers to create story layouts for a 102 page print and digital magazine. I primarily worked on two stories: Escape from the Cold and Hands-on Healing. Working on Flux gave me a great deal of design and organizational experience and skills.
Hands-on Healing
I worked with the photographer for this editorial piece to narrow down a wide range of 300+ images to a 7-page spread. We decided to go with a full 2-page opening spread regardless of our large amount of images to use because we felt it best encapsulated the story, while being very aesthetically captivating for readers.
Escape from the Cold
For this story, I worked with Flux’s illustrator, reporter, and photographer to create a cohesive piece that accurately captured the complexity of Egan Warming Center, Lane county’s winter shelter for the houseless population in Eugene. I was tasked with creating the design for this story with very few pictures because of Egan Warming Center’s policies regarding photography. I asked Sisi, Flux’s illustrator, to work with the reference photos along with Nick’s article to create a variety of illustrations that portrayed the feeling of finding warmth and shelter with a variety of blues and glowing oranges and yellows. We worked to ensure that our opening page portrayed a visual metaphor for houselessness in a way that was mindful and strong for such an important topic.
